Holiday Celebration

As for me, I am American-born Chinese who celebrates Christmas as a fun holiday. In my family, we would listen to Christmas songs, enjoy cookies, open presents, and spend time with family. The Christmas songs that I listen to are O’ Holy Night, The Twelve Days of Christmas, The First Noel, Gloria In Excelsis Deo. Jingle Bells, White Christmas, Silver Bells, Silent Night, and several other songs. My mom would bake Pillsbury cookies, the ones where cookies are already made, but needs to be placed into the oven. My family would spend time together by going out to dinner at an elegant restaurant, watch a concert, or visit our family members in California. Some of the concerts that I would go to include Christmas or Classical Music. In California, I stay in the Southern California region, in cities of Arcadia and Temple City. My cousins live in Arcadia and Downtown Los Angeles. My grandma lives in a Senior living center in Alhambra. When we go to see my grandma, we would take her out to dinner, talk about pastimes with her, and play mahjong.

Stanzas in Meditation: Stanza LXXXIII By Gertrude Stein

Stanzas in Meditation: Stanza LXXXIII By Gertrude Stein
Why am I if I am uncertain reasons may inclose.
Remain remain propose repose chose.
I call carelessly that the door is open
Which if they may refuse to open
No one can rush to close.
Let them be mine therefor.
Everybody knows that I chose.
Therefor if therefore before I close.
I will therefore offer therefore I offer this.
Which if I refuse to miss may be miss is mine.
I will be well welcome when I come.
Because I am coming.
Certainly I come having come.
These stanzas are done.

I like the poem because of the poet Gertrude Stein. In the following poem, she uses certain words repetitively. The words close, chose, come, and open are used twice. Some of the things she says do not seem to make sense. There are several questions that I have regarding the poem. For example, what does the poet mean with the title, “Stanzas in Meditation: Stanza LXXXIII. The poet continues to say open, close, open, close. I get a negative feeling when I read this. The words of I must do something to get this.

Heroism: Beowulf

Originally an oral epic and composed in Old English, Beowulf – depicting societal values and, of course, a hero – is considered the first great work of English national literature and “one of the most important and exciting epics of Western literature.”

What kind of “exciting” stories of heroism are shared today? How are they shared? Which qualities does (0r would) TODAY’S HEROES have? Compare these with the qualities that you have read so far in Beowulf. If possible, support your comments with one or two specific examples. (250 words).

Stories of heroism that are shared today are the ones that involve saving people from famine or from a criminal. For example, people in the world raise money to support schools in Africa to help the people living there have clean water to use. The people living in a metropolitan city share them or the news reports them. Qualities that today’s heroes have are courage, generosity, and strength. In Beowulf, the hero is named Beowulf. Beowulf is a Geat that traveled to the Danes to save them from Grendel and his mother. Beowulf is described as someone with courage, generosity, kindness, and strength. The hero saves the Danes, which are people from Denmark from an evil force. The evil force relates to a monster and the monster’s mother. Grendel and Grendel’s mother are the monsters. Both of them are described as being cruel, grotesque, homicidal, and scary. They enter the mead-hall killing many of the innocent Danes living under Hrothgar’s rule. The mead-hall is located in Herot, which was a place in the book where the Danes lived. Beowulf, the hero comes to the rescue and battles the monsters. When Beowulf comes to the rescue, he is showing both courage and generosity to the Danes. After a long fight, Beowulf ends up pulling Grendel’s arm off, letting him bleed to death. When Beowulf stabs Grendel’s mother and cuts off Grendel’s cranium, he is displaying strength, because swords were unable to do any harm to the beasts. Those are the kinds of exciting stories referring to heroism that is shared today.

[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in]: by e.e cummings

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
“[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]”

I like the poem in general because of e.e cummings style of writing poetry. e.e cummings is a poet who is famous for his usage of lowercase letters when writing poetry. In general, the poem is well-structured and he uses the same title to begin to the poem as well as to conclude it. The poem made me think about the nature and its surroundings. The root of the root, the bud of the bud, and the sky of the sky are all repetitions in the poem.

Three of my favorite lines are the root of the root, the bud of the bud, and the sky of the sky. The root of the root relates to a tree and the roots beneath the tree must lead to something deep. It sounds like deep refers to something that has a deeper meaning. The buds refer to a flower with something new to come up with. The sky of the sky sounds impossible to think about, but as I know e.e cummings is a poet who creates vivid and creative images for his balance in poetry.

Innocent People

"When bad things happen to good people"
Knowing that Macduff is in England, Macbeth sends murderers to Macduff's home. The murderers kill Macduff's wife and young child. In Macbeth, bad things happen to innocent and good people. The same is true of our world. In this blog post, consider an example of bad things that happen to good people. Explain a situation, and then explain how YOU make sense of it -- or how you deal with the fact that you can't make sense of it. You can make this post as personal or as abstract as you want. Try for 300 words.

In the play Macbeth, several of the characters are described as both good and innocent. They all get murdered for something that they are accused of. It ranges from killing a ruler to just men. In the real world, bad things happen to good and innocent people ranging from being abused, killed, molested, or robbed.
An example to fit the topic relates to a family friend. This family friend was described as being both innocent and trustworthy. He was involved with many things in life from starting organizations, running for a board position, and controlling his business. During one of the organizations that he was considered a board position, some of the other clients were giving some of the members a hard time. He would help to mediate the clients as well as the members. The situation worked out making everyone feeling cheerful and glad. Two years after this situation, he was diagnosed with a serious disease. The medical doctors who tried to help him said that they are unable to save him and only time will tell. After about three weeks, he died. About two weeks later, some of the people at one of the organizations were starting a conflict by removing board positions randomly and organizing events without notifying anyone about them. This really had an effect on me because he is one of my parents’ closest friends. My parents have known him for about 12 years. He was the type of person who worked strenuously and always had a sense of humor. As a student, I believe that he should have taken a day off from work and rest his body. By doing this, he would not have died early. At the same time, people should take care of their own conflicts and prevent them from letting others worry about it.

Blood Map

The word blood is used in Act I-III of Macbeth. Some of the words that are related to blood include birth, bloody, cold, death, evil, flow, gore, guilt, guts, hate, health, heart, kill, kinship, murder, red, sad, and stab. The word blood is associated in the book because Macbeth kills Duncan, gets the murderers to kill Banquo and Macduff’s family. It comes to place because Banquo, Duncan, Lady Macbeth, Lady Macduff, Lady Macduff’s son, and Macbeth die. The word blood points to evil and guilt because the Macbeth household plans the killings and ask the murderers to kill each character that Macbeth wants dead. When someone dies, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin to feel guilty for their actions and decide to cover things up by washing off blood and putting on a different outfit. They also wipe blood on the guards, that way others will think that someone else pulled off the killings.

Word Map

Death, guilt, and murder are descriptions that links to Macbeth. Macbeth is described to be very guilty for what he does and making plans to murder Duncan. Macbeth wants to be the king of Scotland. Guilt, kinship, and gore are descriptions that connect to Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is ravenous for power and would do anything for her husband to be the new king. She is the wife of Macbeth who is described as being cruel, harsh, and violent. Lady Macbeth puts her life in jeopardy in order to be the sovereign of Scotland. She is very good at creating problems for people, in order to get them out the way so she can help win her husband’s goal. For example, a massacre was planned for Duncan that will put jeopardy on his life. She and Macbeth both want to be rulers of Scotland. One is to be the king and other to be queen. Since Duncan is the current king of Scotland, he does not realize that he will be murdered in the near future.

Subtext

Option 2: Write a dialogue (funny or not) between two characters. In the dialog, one character should be trying to get something from the other character -- but trying to do so indirectly. You might include the "subtext" in a different font, or you might just make the subtext obvious by the outcome of the conversation.

Two Characters
Brandon
Matthew

Last night, Brandon forgot to do my homework in math. He decides to ask Matthew for the questions and answers. Brandon sees Matthew walking down the hall.

Brandon: Hello!

Matthew: Hello! How are you?

Brandon: Good. Let me ask you something.

Matthew: Go ahead. Ask a way?

Brandon: I forgot to do my homework last night. I was hoping you could hook me up.

Matthew: Only this time. Ok

Brandon: Thanks! Meet me in the restroom on the 3rd floor.

Matthew: Okay!

Brandon: I walked to the restroom on the 3rd floor and waited.

Matthew: Okay, I am here! Where are you?

Brandon: In the first stall, doing my business

Matthew: Here is the paper.

Brandon: Take the paper. Wait there is doughnuts at the café. Can I give you the paper later?

Matthew: Sure!

Brandon: I took his paper and copied the problems and answers. I went to the 1st floor after I copied the homework.

Matthew: I’m back. Where are you? There was no answer.

Matthew: Don’t do this to me. Where are you? There was still no answer.

Brandon: I headed to my math class and put my things down. As I went out, someone was waiting for me.

Matthew: Aha! You took my paper and copied the answers. Then you got rid of the paper. How dare you? Oh ya, do you have your English homework.

Brandon: Yes I do.

Matthew: Can I see it. I heard that they are giving out free t-shirts at the library, but wait they might see you. Leave the paper with me. When you are done, go to class.

Brandon: okay.

Brandon: I took his essay, removed his name and put my name on it.

Matthew: I wonder if he might be doing something fishy just like what I did to him.

Brandon: Now sitting in my seat and waiting for the teacher to ask for homework, I wonder if he will know what I did.

Brandon: I wonder if he still can find the math homework.

Brandon: Hmm, there will be no end to this.

Matthew: Hmm, there will be no end to this either.

Macbeth & King Duncan Explanations

After reading this far, you should be able to form a picture in your mind of the characters. Think about the witches, Macbeth, Banquo, Angus, and Ross. What would they look like?

I think that Macbeth would look like Vlad III or Vlad the Impaler. Macbeth is considered as someone who is very violent and murderous. He is described similar to Vlad because they both share similar traits and personalities. During the medieval times, people would wear clothing of their own time period. Vlad is wearing a coat with buttons and a triangular hat. His hair is really long and he has a mustache. In most of Shakespeare’s’ plays, the characters wear a similar hat that Vlad wears. The silver beads wrapped around his head gives a clue as to if he is wealthy or not. Macbeth wants to be a ruler and is also really wealthy.

I think that the Burger King’s King is an appropriate picture for my character. My character is a king just like a restaurant’s mascot. The crown in the picture resembles the one placed on Duncan’s head. In the picture, the coat worn by a king resembles a similar coat that King Duncan of Scotland wears. One filled with value, wealth, and respect. The jewelry worn on the king’s hand shows that King Duncan is wealthy since he is the ruler of Scotland. Everything that the character in the picture has resembles similar aspects of Duncan’s clothing.

How to define ambition?

BLOG ASSIGNMENT # 5 AMBITION.
Is ambition something absolutely positive? Is there a dark side to it? How do you feel and think about ambition?

Aiming to be the best is what ambition means to me. Aiming in terms of being the top in the class or possibly the grade. In order to get me there, I have to work hard to earn that accomplishment. When this ambition comes to me, I will try my best to get there. In order to be the best you must beat the best. In my case, determination is something that is absolutely positive. When I take a viewpoint into working and taking pride, there is something that comes to me that is positive. Since I am writing a desire that I consider positive, there will not be an evil side to it. When I think about ambition, I believe that it exists for the rest of your life from getting into college to raising your family. I feel confident about my ambition because I know what to do in the future as time flies. Just as I aim to fit my ambition, I know that new situations and conflicts will come to me.

If you really wanted something, and someone predicted that you were going to get it, how would that prediction affect your behavior? As much as possible, support your reflections with examples.

If I really wanted something and someone predicted that I was going to obtain it, that prediction will affect my behavior in numerous ways. Firstly, my behavior will be kept positive in a way. In order to keep it positive, I have to obtain what I want my earning it rather than cheat my way to receive it. By all means, earning the prize is always better than stealing it. For example, if I want a pair of shoes that was worth 60 dollars, I would work for it rather than ask for money to pay for the item. When someone predicts that I will get what I want, I must understand that it sometimes will not happen. That is how a prediction will affect my behavior in relation to how someone predicts that I will get something that I really want.

32 Seconds Macbeth Response

Summary
There is one way that you can describe the play Macbeth. Fair is foul and foul is fair is something that I cannot describe at the top of my head. What bloody man is that? describes someone who must have come in with blood on him or her. A drum, a drum! Macbeth doth come shows that Macbeth is coming in due to the sounding of drums. So foul and fair that I have not seen comes from line one where I am unable to describe. All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter shows that the townspeople want Macbeth to be their king. If chance will have me king, then chance will crown me is where its possible that Macbeth might be king if the villagers decide. I cannot describe unsex me here. If it were when ‘tis’ done shows that Macbeth wants to kill someone. Screw your courage to the sticking place shows that if it makes you happy just do it. Is this a dagger that I see before me? shows that Macbeth stabs actor four. A little water clears us of this deed shows that it is better to cover up a dead body. Fly, good, Fleance, fly! explains that actor six dies. Blood will have blood shows that Macbeth is evil. Double, double, toil and trouble explains that Macbeth is in trouble. He has kill’d me, mother! explains that Macbeth has wiped out actor seven. Bleed, bleed, poor country! explains that the country is facing problems. Out damn’d spot! means that actor five dies. Out, out, brief candle! shows that Macbeth wants to move on. Turn, hell-hound, turn! shows that Macbeth is being chased to death. Lay on Macduff! explains that Macbeth dies. Hail, king of Scotland! means that a new ruler shall be coming soon.
Observations
There are two observations that I find while reading the Macbeth play’s script. One of the observations that I find is that actor four, five, six, and seven dies. The other observations that I find are that Macbeth dies at the end.
Questions
There are two questions in the Macbeth play’s script that I need help answered. One of the questions is describe the meaning of Fair is foul and foul is fair. The second question is what does it mean when it says Unsex me here?

Homer and Langley: Text Sandwich Exercise

While reading the novel, I saw the house that Langley and homer lived in was a complete dump. During the 1970s, once an elegant mansion is turned into a dump. Homer and Langley Collyer became recluses by boarding up windows, barricading the door, setting up traps, and living in the dark. All of the people who lived in the home entered and left. One family was placed in internment camps, and the other went to war. Rubber tires, an iron pressure cooker, dressmaker’s dummies, empty bureau drawers, beer kegs, and flowerpots were stacked in a pyramidal fashion by Langley Collyer (Doctorow 206). In the picture below, I see newspapers, boxes, chairs, picture frames, and books. A chandelier is hanging from the ceiling, which probably is located in the living room of the house. The ceilings are filled with cracks in need of repair. A bookshelf can also be seen hinting that the objects are stacked high in the living room. The room seems to be inaccessible due to the large amount of objects dumped together.

Literary vs. Writing

Why should we care about literary texts?
We should care about literary text for several reasons. Literary texts are just another way of saying novels or poetry texts. Literary texts are important because they cover the major points in reading such as: genres, themes, characters, setting, plot, symbols, tone, and voice. Putting these terms to deeper meanings include author’s purpose, inferences, generalizations, drawing conclusions, main idea, and details. Night is a literary text that I read in 10th grade that has made my life rich. Having to learn about the struggles that the author went to during the Holocaust has given me new things in life to see and approach. Mr. Wiesel who sees him getting separated from his family and working in death camps is facing a struggle and hardship.

Which role can a Personal Learning Network (PLN) play in all of this?

http://www.aspringofhope.org/
The link I chose is related to a spring of hope. I can use this to understand hardships and struggles better because as I watch the video of Africans carrying a bucket and walking for a couple of hours to fetch a bucket of water; I feel that it is a struggle in their life. The children must bring back the water to their families so they can use for their own daily activities. I see that they are facing hardships and struggles to know the meaning of survival in their life.

How should you use your blog to understand literature better?
I should use my blog to understand literature better by paying close attention to my teacher’s lectures. By doing this, literature will eventually come to me and I can end up grasping the information from literature or texts.

Find something that you can use: Twitter, Blogger, Youtube?

Something that I can use to understand literature better is using sparknotes.

Introduction to Eng IV Per C.

Hello, my name is Matthew Yang. I am American-born Chinese who was born in Boston, MA and raised in Plantation, FL. I have the ability to speak three languages. My three languages are American English, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. I live in a double parent home with an older brother who now attends Boston University. I have an interest in aviation, cooking, and mathematics. I am currently a senior attending at North Broward Preparatory School. I have attended this school since 9th grade and have seen many changes across campus from teachers leaving to walls being remodeled. In the end of my sophomore year, I was made a member of the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is a group where students help out with fundraisers such as the talent show and the spring fling. During that time, I began to tutor my fellow students in various subjects from Math to Spanish. I am lucky to be in this group as well as meeting new friends.
I am the president and founder of the Chinese Language and Culture that started in late 2010. I began this organization to show everyone how important Chinese people are at our school. By starting this club, many students and teachers become enthusiastic to the language and culture. My first bake sale took place on May 13, 2011 and our club made a total of $85 during two lunch periods. I was proud of my fellow officers for helping me to create this and make it very successful.
I am glad to be a part of Mr. Parson’s English class. I want to tell you that English is one of my favorite subjects because I like to engage myself in literature and writing. I find out that by writing more papers and reading more books, one can do better in the course.
